This workshop inspired me to reflect and gear up to do some critical work to center Black and Brown narratives in my elementary art room. Flavia’s philosophies, techniques, examples, and resources are just as impactful as her ability to grow a sense of community in a short period of time. The most meaningful two hours of my summer, for sure!
I would recommend this workshop to anyone interested in expanding their art history knowledge to be more centered on Black and Brown experiences. So many educators want to ‘do better’ but don’t know where to start. This workshop fills a gap in the art history education most of us received, and equips us with an alternative approach to the ‘canon,’ that centers artists of the global majority. I especially enjoyed the incorporation of popular culture and how to make this content more accessible for younger students.
